Issue 001 February 2004

EM3 students are often perceived as 'hopeless'. But this is not true. Students who are self-driven and self-motivated are always able to break through this stereotyping and achieve success.

Since 2003, CDAC has created a Special Category Award for outstanding EM3 students who have done well and made it to the Secondary One Normal Academic stream.

Chen Jia Yi is currently studying at Canberra Secondary School. As an EM3 student at Canberra Primary School in 2002, she defied all odds to emerge as the EM3 student who obtained the second highest national scores in the PSLE, and secured for herself a well-deserved place in the Normal (Academic) stream. A quiet and soft-spoken girl, Jia Yi humbly attributed her outstanding academic performance to both her CDAC tutors, Mr Han and Mr Yeo Teow Eng.

Mr Han described Jia Yi as a 'very diligent and determined girl' who had performed well and outshone her peers. On the other hand, Jia Yi expressed her deep-felt gratitude to Mr Han, for allocating time amidst his hectic schedule, to give her personal coaching on his own accord. She credited both her tutors for their patience in coaching her and for their dedication towards educating the next generation. Both tutors helped her to improve her grades and inspired her to make teaching a career choice. She hopes to become a teacher with a passion to teach and not give up on children who are weaker in their studies, just like her tutors who have never given up on her.

CDAC will do its best to reach out to all students who are under-performing academically. With good faith and a lot of hard work, everything is possible.
