In line with the CDAC’s new focus of adopting a “family centric” approach in its programmes and activities, the Volunteers and Social Services Committee has piloted a Parent Development Programme (PDP).

The participants are parents whose children are attending CDAC tuition classes. While waiting for their children, the parents are invited to participate in a 1.5-hour session of PDP. They will attend four sessions on effective communication skills with children and budgeting skills. In order to inject a

human touch into the programme, a group of 28 volunteers were recruited and trained to serve as volunteer mentors to facilitate and motivate parents during the PDP sessions. They will also be assigned to 2-3 parents after the PDP to maintain regular contacts with these parents and to provide support and assistance for a period of time. All the volunteers are very excited and one of them,

Mr Terence Choh sums up their feelings, “I can't wait to get started, this being such an innovative, educational and meaningful initiative!”

The first round of PDP commenced on 9 April 2005 at two selected CDAC tuition centres, namely CDAC Headquarters and Xin Min Primary School. A total of 43 parents participated in this pilot project. These parents and their family members will be invited to participate in a “Family Bonding Camp” (亲子营) after completing four sessions of the PDP.
